Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER - Sharon Stone tells her own story: a journey of healing, love, and purpose。 - "Not your typical Hollywood autobiography。 Brutally honest, restless and questing。" --O, The Oprah Magazine

Sharon Stone, one of the most renowned actresses in the world, suffered a massive stroke that cost her not only her health, but her career, family, fortune, and global fame。 In The Beauty of Living Twice, Stone chronicles her efforts to rebuild her life and writes about her slow road back to wholeness and health。 In a business that doesn't accept failure, in a world where too many voices are silenced, Stone found the power to return, the courage to speak up, and the will to make a difference in the lives of men, women, and children around the globe。

Over the course of these intimate pages, as candid as a personal conversation, Stone talks about her pivotal roles, her life-changing friendships, her worst disappointments, and her greatest accomplishments。 She reveals how she went from a childhood of trauma and violence to a career in an industry that in many ways echoed those same assaults, under cover of money and glamour。 She describes the strength and meaning she found in her children, and in her humanitarian efforts。 And ultimately, she shares how she fought her way back to find not only her truth, but her family's reconciliation and love。

Stone made headlines not just for her beauty and her talent, but for her candor and her refusal to "play nice," and it's those same qualities that make this memoir so powerful。 The Beauty of Living Twice is a book for the wounded and a book for the survivors; it's a celebration of women's strength and resilience, a reckoning, and a call to activism。 It is proof that it's never too late to raise your voice and speak out。

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book。 Perhaps just another Hollywood star bragging about their accomplishments? Absolutely not! While Stone does touch briefly on stardom, this is the story of a woman who has been knocked down by life on numerous occasions, and always manages to pull herself back up。

I cannot remember at whose suggestion I purchased this book, but I saw Sharon on the cover and thought it was time I found out what she had to say。 Wow。 I am not particularly familiar with her work beyond her bigger films, and I didn't pay attention to her charity work for HIV/AIDS and AMFAR。 So I was surprised at the path her life has taken, which goes way way way outside the lines of a typical actor's or movie star's career。 Sharon has her sh*t together, and I learned a lot from her just readi I cannot remember at whose suggestion I purchased this book, but I saw Sharon on the cover and thought it was time I found out what she had to say。 Wow。 I am not particularly familiar with her work beyond her bigger films, and I didn't pay attention to her charity work for HIV/AIDS and AMFAR。 So I was surprised at the path her life has taken, which goes way way way outside the lines of a typical actor's or movie star's career。 Sharon has her sh*t together, and I learned a lot from her just reading this story。 I highly recommend taking the time to read this memoir, which will no doubt offer some insight into your own life, or even comfort for some of the things we are all challenged by。 I really liked the feminist voice of this book, too。 I am now a huge Sharon Stone fan, and I love that we have a love for Patti Smith in common! 。。。more

I am really not a big fan of this actress, and I read the book as a referral。 I knew she was an activist for HIV/Aids, but she has helped homeless in Calif too。 Her book does discuss her struggle in life as a brain bleed put her life on hold。 It is a good book encompassing her life from child to adult。 I think we all just assume actors come from great families and reality they are just like everyone else in this world, as people with ups and downs through out their life。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Before I write this review, I want to say that I respect Sharon stone as an actor, as someone who was willing to share her deep childhood trauma with the world, as a survivor of serious medical issues, for her activism and charity work, and her willingness to speak out about the misogyny in Hollywood and to be outspoken in general。 She seems like a bad ass in real life。 That said, this book is so full of chaotic energy, I’m not sure I can rate it more than 2 1/2 stars。 She really needed a better Before I write this review, I want to say that I respect Sharon stone as an actor, as someone who was willing to share her deep childhood trauma with the world, as a survivor of serious medical issues, for her activism and charity work, and her willingness to speak out about the misogyny in Hollywood and to be outspoken in general。 She seems like a bad ass in real life。 That said, this book is so full of chaotic energy, I’m not sure I can rate it more than 2 1/2 stars。 She really needed a better editor, or a ghost writer。 The chapters of the book aren’t organized in any particular manner, the timeline for the first half of the book bounces back-and-forth, and much of it feels like stream of consciousness rambling from topic to topic。 Often, various topics just within one page alone。 Some of the problems of the narrative include that Sharon spent a lot of time trying to convince us that very ordinary things are unique and special (midwest accents, various aspects of her upbringing that appear to be typical of the time period, her family’s Irish ancestry, etc。)。 Examples of inconsistencies: many pages were spent telling us how poor her family was as she grew up, but then she also says that her family lived in a huge farmhouse, there was always plenty of food, her father golfed as a hobby, she attended college for awhile, and then she mentions that she “only“ had three pairs of shoes as a child。 I’m not trying to doubt her vaacity about her life experience, but there are so many stories in this book that felt a little too much to be true, or else the whimsical way she described events and people causes one to draw that conclusion。 I admire that she wrote this book as a way to heal her family from their generational trauma, and the tender way which she speaks about the new found relationship with her mother and the various insights she shared。 But, I can’t really say that I enjoyed this book, or that I’d recommended it anyone else。 。。。more

Such a great book。 I learned quite a bit about Sharon and her life。 The chapters of how her life changed when she was on-top of the world were interesting and all the health problems she went through and almost died were eye-opening。 Highly recommend this one。

Great memoir with much honesty on hard issues (incense, harassment)。 Sharon is very direct which gave the audiobook an edge that made her level of self-awareness and forgiveness even more enduring。 Sharon has a hell of a story, both as a star and a person, and most importantly, a survivor。Sharon is a very good writer and excellent narrator。

I had no idea what Sharon Stone has gone through in her life,so this was eye-opening。 It lends a lot to the idiom that you can't judge a book by its cover。 I am amazed at how she has come out to a place of enlightenment (my words) as she shares her experiences in this book。 Parts of the book are hard to listen to because of the brutal treatment she experienced and because it resonated with some of my own life experiences。 Truth is truth, and it can set us free! Sharon Stone's memoir is one of the best I have read in awhile。 She is intelligent, gutsy, caring, loyal and honest。 She has lived life to the fullest and learned an incredible amount about human nature and society in the process。 This is a gem which I am adding to my own personal library。 Sharon Stone's memoir is one of the best I have read in awhile。 She is intelligent, gutsy, caring, loyal and honest。 She has lived life to the fullest and learned an incredible amount about human nature and society in the process。 This is a gem which I am adding to my own personal library。 。。。more

Loved hearing about Sharon Stone’s extraordinary life with her own voice, breaking with tears at times, and also full of laughter too, in her memoir。 It wasn’t at all what I expected。 She shares amazing stories about her friendships and family, including her sexual abuse。 Deeply moving to hear about her relationship with her mother and pride in becoming a mother。

Sharon Stone has given us a gift by sharing her painful, personal life journey - and, her fabulous success of making peace within after a stroke nearly killed her。 Her narrative is a gem - liberating the reader of the senseless guilt we may have about a painful childhood and how it carried itself into adulthood,

Sharon Stone’s memoir grabs you from its opening paragraph: Barely conscious, a doctor tells her her brain is bleeding。 It takes a few days to figure out she had an aneurysm。 From there, we learn of her childhood, her career and her taking ownership of life after coming so close to losing it。In parts, “The Beauty of Living Twice” is amazing, frank and fascinating。 Stone’s journey feels authentic, and in giving so much of herself, her encouragement to readers to find their own truth feels exhilar Sharon Stone’s memoir grabs you from its opening paragraph: Barely conscious, a doctor tells her her brain is bleeding。 It takes a few days to figure out she had an aneurysm。 From there, we learn of her childhood, her career and her taking ownership of life after coming so close to losing it。In parts, “The Beauty of Living Twice” is amazing, frank and fascinating。 Stone’s journey feels authentic, and in giving so much of herself, her encouragement to readers to find their own truth feels exhilarating。But there are many other parts that feel vague, like she’s floating through a point instead of hitting it。 #MeToo, her child custody struggles, her fading fame。 These are deeply personal, painful memories — there’s no flaw in the intent, and it doesn’t feel counterfeit … just frustratingly inconsistent and needlessly enigmatic。 。。。more

I listened to the unabridged 7-hour audio version of this title (read by the author, Random House Audio, 2021)。 Sharon Stone, the glamorous actress who rose to fame with the controversial blockbuster hit "Basic Instinct," suffered a deadly brain hemorrhage in 2001 and underwent a risky procedure, with a 1% survival chance, which gave her a second life。 She went on to raise millions for HIV/AIDS research and other causes。 In this candid, warm, and graceful memoir, Stone offers some startling pers I listened to the unabridged 7-hour audio version of this title (read by the author, Random House Audio, 2021)。 Sharon Stone, the glamorous actress who rose to fame with the controversial blockbuster hit "Basic Instinct," suffered a deadly brain hemorrhage in 2001 and underwent a risky procedure, with a 1% survival chance, which gave her a second life。 She went on to raise millions for HIV/AIDS research and other causes。 In this candid, warm, and graceful memoir, Stone offers some startling personal revelations (for example, that she and her younger sister were victims of long-term sexual abuse by their grandfather) and urges forgiveness: "I have learned to forgive the unforgivable。 My hope is that as I share my journey, you too will learn to do the same。"The second life of the title may also refer to Stone emerging from the trauma of sexual abuse, in her youth and, later, during her acting career, to become a caring and functioning adult again。 She doesn't name names, but writes about a host of film-set characters who had expectations of a sexual nature。 Ironically, what seems like an exploitative role in "Basic Instinct" was liberating to Stone, because it allowed her to act out her rage against her grandfather。 She has only recently begun a relationship with her mother and, at 63, is optimistic about her family dynamics。The Beauty of Living Twice has helped Stone examine her life and answer some tough questions about herself, but it has also created additional questions。 Equally important, it has allowed readers to shed her image as an aloof and icy glamour queen in favor of a hurt, but kind and determined, individual。 。。。more

An honest confession about a life full of everything: from fame at Cannes to childhood incest, from a near-death experience to building an unconventional family, from losing loved ones to death and accidents to offering help to AIDS charities and homeless kids, from beauty to a double mastectomy, from despair to finding meaning through Buddism, and so on。 I liked the narrative voice that did not focus so much on the chronological events, but rather on how various experiences felt and what she ha An honest confession about a life full of everything: from fame at Cannes to childhood incest, from a near-death experience to building an unconventional family, from losing loved ones to death and accidents to offering help to AIDS charities and homeless kids, from beauty to a double mastectomy, from despair to finding meaning through Buddism, and so on。 I liked the narrative voice that did not focus so much on the chronological events, but rather on how various experiences felt and what she have learned, and what she would advise others to do in her situation。 Misogyny on the set and in the broader movie industry, lack of communication within the family on though subjects, lack of self-forgiveness are such subjects that Sharon Stone develops in this memoir。For example, when talking about a pregnancy interruption in her adolescent years, she remembers:" When I finally came out of it, I took all of the bloody sheets and clothes and torched them in a burning barrel at school and showered in the shared showers in the dorm and went back to class。 I refused to talk to D ever again。 I was too scared, ashamed, traumatized, fractured, tormented, and, most important, uneducated about everything, to move。Eventually, a local Planned Parenthood opened, and I went for proper birth control and some counseling。 This, above all else, saved me: that someone, anyone, could talk to me, educate me。 On one ever had, about anything"。In another place, after admitting that she is an incest survivor and elaborating on the love-hate relationship she had with her mother, Stone reflects:"Now, for the first time in my life, I understand just how much my mother loves me。 When she told me that she taught me to “stand on your own two goddamn feet,” that was her most loving and generous gift to me。 That was the thing she had。 The thing that she knew。 The thing that helped her the most, the thing that saved her。 That was the thing she knew for sure would be the most helpful to me and would save me time and time again。 She was right。 This world does not help women。 It does not love women。 It does not heal women, nor does it protect us。 We must know how to stand on our own two goddamn feet, I am both proud and sorry to say。 Only now I say it with all of the love I have, and I have so much。 For now, I am able not only to receive love from my mother but to love my mother in return。" 。。。more

Having experienced a brain tumor and stroke in 2021, I wanted to read this book to hear about Sharon's Stone's medical experiences。 There were some passages that I could really relate to: feeling overwhelmed and going through a grieving period。 However, I found the writing to be really hard to follow。 You could definitely hear Sharon's authentic voice coming through, but the story was very opaque and disjointed。 I think the book should have been edited with a heavier hand。 Having experienced a brain tumor and stroke in 2021, I wanted to read this book to hear about Sharon's Stone's medical experiences。 There were some passages that I could really relate to: feeling overwhelmed and going through a grieving period。 However, I found the writing to be really hard to follow。 You could definitely hear Sharon's authentic voice coming through, but the story was very opaque and disjointed。 I think the book should have been edited with a heavier hand。 。。。more

As memoirs go, Sharon stone meandered and didn’t have a coherent timeline for the tales she was telling。 The start of the book in which she discusses her childhood was fantastic then it slides into a mish mash of stories; stories that are interesting but aren’t quite quilted together correctly。 And for this, I felt it dragged on。 An example that frustrated me, she would go to great lengths to give details of her exemplary humanitarian efforts then casually in the next sentence say she didn’t hav As memoirs go, Sharon stone meandered and didn’t have a coherent timeline for the tales she was telling。 The start of the book in which she discusses her childhood was fantastic then it slides into a mish mash of stories; stories that are interesting but aren’t quite quilted together correctly。 And for this, I felt it dragged on。 An example that frustrated me, she would go to great lengths to give details of her exemplary humanitarian efforts then casually in the next sentence say she didn’t have custody of one of her kids (and elaborate no further about her kid)。 。。。more
